The subcontinent of India lies in south Asia, between Pakistan, China and Nepal. To the north it is bordered by the world's highest mountain chain, where foothill valleys cover the northernmost of the country's 26 states. Further south, plateaus, tropical rain forests and sandy deserts are bordered by palm fringed beaches. India is a melting pot of 1.1 billion people and is the world’s largest democracy - a mosaic of six ethnic racial groups and the birthplace of four religions - Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism.

The name “India” is derived from the River Indus which was the site of the first river valley settlement. Later Aryan settlers referred to the Rover Indus as Sindhu. Persian invaders converted “Sinhu” into “Hindu” and the name “Hindustan” became known as the land of Hindus.

From the highest peaks in the Himalayas to the serene beaches of Goa, India is known for its beautiful landscapes and regions. In a country as diverse and complex as India, it is not surprising to find that people here reflect the rich glories of the past, the culture, traditions and values relative to geographic locations and the numerous distinctive manners, habits and food that will always remain truly Indian.
